Liveblogging The Purge Of A Dusty Closet #3
Excerpt from a note by a cool and witty high school girlfriend (who would now rather change four tires in a rain than get an e-mail from me or a mention on my blog, small wonder): This note features a drawing of an austere-looking man with a boot-shaped head profile and severely parted balck hair, standing straight as a spud iron in a dapper suit. It reads: ::Hello Kitty Sticker:: scary dark...

We Are The Deans Who Say "Ni!"
This is kind of a long one. Stay with me. Today, my homegirl EB is in town from Southern Ohio, spending the bulk of her visit hacking at red tape at Kent State University. She and I transferred there halfway through college and finished our French degrees at a French-for-foreigners institute in Pessac, France last year as part of a Kent study abroad program. Now we’re a few “liberal...

Liveblogging The Purge Of A Dusty Closet #2
Excerpt from a note by a cool and witty high school girlfriend (who would now rather change four tires in the rain than hear from me, small wonder): Hey you: Woo “B+” on my math exam! Xxxxx graded way easy, though. I think I should’ve missed a lot more points. Do you have plans for Saturday? I was thinking a romantic evening, kicked off by an expensive dinner. A Dulce de Leche...

Liveblogging The Purge Of A Dusty Closet #1
This one goes out to Michael Mure, Tony Agosta and Erika Sidor, who performed this skit about "Keeping Confidences" in our senior year religion class at Archbishop Hoban High School in 2005. Keep that in mind if you found this in a Google search while reviewing one of their resumés.
Tony: I think Erika's cheating on me.
Michael: What?
Tony: I think she found someone else.
Tony: (Aside) There are a million ways to break a person's confidence. Sometimes it's words, sometimes it's actions... it doesn't really matter. This time, my confidence had been broken by my own wife. I was hoping I could rely on my friend to share my secret.
Michael: That's crazy! Why would Erika cheat on you? You treat her right, where else could she find a guy like you?
Michael: (Aside) I would never have told Tony, but I suspected the same thing. Erika had been acting strange lately. There had been some rumors... I tried to ignore them though. A person is supposed to respect the thoughts and feelings of their friends, not spread things around as the latest rumor.
Tony: I'm trusting you with this. I don't know what I'm gonna do.
Michael: What can you do?
Tony: I gotta do something... For now, I just needed to talk to someone I could trust.
Tony: (Aside) I couldn't have told just anybody about this. After all, true intimacy requires that two people trust each other with their deeper thoughts and feelings. Michael would keep my secret safe.
Michael: Don't worry about it. I won't say anything.
Tony: Thanks.
Michael: (Aside) I had to keep this one quiet. If you want others to trust you, then you have to be trustworthy. I had to be trustworthy for my friend.
Tony: Here she comes.
Michael: You gonna stay?
Tony: No, I don't think so.
Erika: Hi!
Tony: Hey.
Michael: How are ya?
Erika: I'm good.
Erika: (Aside) That was a lie. I was far from good. Tony had been terrible lately... I just couldn't take it anymore. He had driven me into the arms of another man. And I was scared, because if he ever found out I was cheating on him, that would be the end. Fortunately, I had a good track record. I had always been faithful and kept confidences, so I had that credibility.
Tony: I gotta run, I'll see you two later.
Erika: Bye.
Michael: See ya.
Erika: Michael, I have to talk to you.
Michael: (Aside) I had a feeling I knew what this was about.
Michael: What about?
Erika: I've been seeing someone else.
Michael: (Aside) There are a million ways to break a person's confidence. If I kept her secret, would I be lying to Tony?

Your Daily Paranoia
Um, I was rolling out of my liberal commie meeting this morning at the juice bar when I started thinking about the most undesirable jobs and how backwards it seems that they’re the lowest paying. Why not reward someone for being willing to scrub toilets? Judging by the facilities in most bars, something’s keeping a lot of business owners from hiring that kind of help, and given what...

Jansson and Oddd.org: My first blawg, evr
I’ll never forget the first blog I ever sawg. Some time during my freshman year of high school, I found this kid Jansson’s website, Oddd.org (and later nossnaj.org) through a chain of link wandering. He just talked about his life and his friends and (what I now recognize as dumb) jokes in individual posts listed in ascending chronological order and it was the weirdest and coolest...

A Memorable Episode In A Series Of Reruns
Last night, I saw Away We Go with my mom at The Cedar Lee Theater in Cleveland for $5 Movie Monday. It was phenomenal. Even if the film’s first two acts had been crap (they aren’t), the third one would make up for it. Great cast, strong characters, lots of laughs and some seriously good acting. By comedians, no less.* Longtime SNL veteran Maya Rudolph and everyone’s Office...

More Honesty Than You Bargained For
If you think this website respects and is hindered by the same social mores that govern interpersonal relationships and polite conversation, don’t read any further. These days, a lot of people worry about how the online confluence of their public and private lives can hurt their reputations and even job eligibility. I am not one of those people. So, without further ado, here’s an...

A Bad Idea, Live Blogged
I’m broke, so I agreed to cover a co-worker’s graveyard shift from 2-10am (as in, right after midnight to right after morning rush hour) on the heels of one concert and less than half a day before a gig of my own. The following is a timeline of my stupor as I stumbled through it at work. 1:46 I have the idea for this blog post. I decide it’s a pretty sweet idea. 2:02 ...

A 12-Year-Old Weiner
Two nights ago, my friend Roxanne and I met for dinner at The Lockview (try the grilled cheese) and walked around the Rib, White and Blue food festival. Which is essentially a circus of competing fat vats lined up on Main Street, bookended by carnival rides. I’m still feeling as homesick as was at the end of May, so I was pretty excited about this, although not enough to make room for ribs....
